You can always turn the camera off. The main purpose of the DashCam is to continuously record video while driving. It is about keeping the recording as evidence in case of a possible accident. Pausing recording to preserve your memories of your trip is preventing the camera from fulfilling its primary purpose.
If you need older recordings, copy them from microSD card or over WiFi. I never watch my old recordings because there is nothing interesting on them. Only reason I have this camera is to record last few hours (days) so it documents actions in case of the accident, not to watch how I drive. But, that's just me.
